Isn’t Tengku Maimun more independent than KSN to helm task force to probe Azam Baki?

SUCH option is playing on the lips of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) head honcho Tan Sri Azam Baki’s detractors in the wake of the Madani government having formed a special task force helmed by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar recently to investigate the former’s shares dabbling allegations.

This follows a proposal by Subang MP Wong Chen who belongs to the faction of former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli to add “a respected retired judge” into the three-men task force of whom former chief justice (CJ) Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat fits the bill.

The idea of Wong who is also the Parliamentary Special Select Committee (PSSC) chairman on International Relations and Trade was seconded by DAP lawmaker Teresa Kok who went a step further in wanting Malaysia’s first female CJ to chair the said task force.

“She’s recognised by a vast majority of Malaysians as having excellent qualifications, unquestionable integrity and a proven record of independence,” justified the former National DAP vice-chairman who is also the six-term Seputeh MP.

“Her involvement will immediately enhance the credibility, public confidence and legitimacy of the investigation process.”

Interestingly, Kok’s idea which goes a long way in correcting the misperception of the “left hand investigating the right hand” has seemingly received aye from both sides of the political divide as attested by Malaysiakini which ran the idea with the Opposition side.

PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden who is also the Alor Setar MP has given thumbs-up and so did Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal who was recently sacked from Bersatu as well as Kota Belud MP Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis – the sole female Warisan MP.

Vouching for innocence

However, Malaysia’s top graft buster has shot down the need for him to go on garden leave to enable the special task force to have a free hand in carrying out their duty.

“I don’t need to go on leave. Before this, there are other individuals who were investigated or charged in court but they were still on duty,” he told the media after launching Kampung Angkat Madani at Kampung Sungai Buah in Sepang yesterday.

“They can carry out their responsibilities and I am ready to give any documents or statements that they need. There is nothing to hide.”

Elsewhere, the Free Malaysia Today (FMT) estimated that over 200 #TangkapAzamBaki rally protestors gathered and marched from in from the SOGO Kuala Lumpur shopping mall to Dataran Merdeka yesterday (Feb 15) afternoon calling for Azam to resign following his latest shareholding controversy.

The BERSIH (Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections)-led rally also featured Pandan MP and former economy minister Rafizi, former natural resources and environmental sustainability minister and Setiawanga MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Wong Chen as speakers.
