PAS researcher slams Nga Kor Ming for the failure of the MyKiosk project

THE DIRECTOR of Research and Policy for the PAS Central Information Department, Ir Ts Dr Nurul Islam Mohamed Yusoff, said the MACC’s recommendations for improvement in the MyKiosk programme is a slap for the Minister of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), Nga Kor Ming.

According to him, the failure of the MyKiosk project implementation stems from the “execute first, study later” work culture within the Madani Government administration.

He added that when the MyKiosk issue was first revealed, Nga Kor Ming was seen sending documents to the MACC.

“Although the MACC stated there was no leakage, the management weaknesses mentioned clearly show an administrative failure, to the extent that the project worth RM150 mil did not achieve the desired results,” he said in a statement.

Yusoff said the MyKiosk project involves large public allocations. In 2023 (MyKiosk 1.0), RM50 mil was allocated to build about 3,189 kiosks, each costing around RM15,000.

In 2024 (MyKiosk 2.0), funding doubled to RM100 mil for about 4,054 kiosks, with the cost ceiling rising to RM25,000 per unit. The project expanded in its second phase with more kiosks, higher funding, and a larger per-unit cost allowance.

He claims this brings the total allocation to RM150 mil for about 7,200 MyKiosk units nationwide, adding that this is not a small figure besides being the people’s money which should be managed with full responsibility.

On the MACC’s recommendations, he focused on the graftbuster’s mention of a comprehensive needs study encompassing feasibility assessments and economic impact.

It includes improving project outcomes in Key Performance Indicators as well as the establishment of a monitoring unit or special committee to evaluate the effectiveness and achievements of the project.

On the other hand, he chided the minister for “dumping” the kiosks in non-strategic areas, which is something the public and the opposition criticised before.

“Why dump MyKiosks in non-strategic areas? Just to increase the number of MyKiosks? Eh, the money wasted is the people’s money, not Nga Kor Ming’s money. When you dump MyKiosks in non-strategic places, and then there is no monitoring, it becomes a white elephant project,” he said. —Focus Malaysia
