PM says ignore angry few, focus on unity and big picture

As the national narrative continues to be dominated by issues surrounding race and religion, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged Malaysians to focus on the bigger picture, noting that much of the noise comes from only a small minority.

Speaking at a Chinese New Year celebration in Kuala Lumpur today, he highlighted that the nation’s true strength lies in the unity of its multiracial society, built on mutual respect for cultural and religious differences.

“We uphold human values and understand the importance of culture and dignity. This is what we nurture, so that our focus remains on values and economic strength.

“Sometimes, in Malaysia, we get too caught up in petty issues and forget that if our economy is not strong, if investment does not grow, there will be no hope for our young people in terms of jobs and quality education,” he said.

‘Most of us want peace’

Anwar called on Malaysians to focus on the larger issues shaping the country’s future and to avoid being drawn into divisive matters.

He stressed the need to unite against the influence of certain individuals and groups who seek to stir racial tensions.

“Those who want to cause trouble, create problems, and get angry every day - this is a small group. The majority of the people want this country to be peaceful, have a strong economy, and respect all cultures and religions in the nation.

“Sometimes we are affected by the views of a small group. Yes… It’s possible, but sometimes it’s very excessive. The majority want peace, unity, and prosperity.

“We must not let the groups that only create problems take over,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

Also in attendance at the Federation of Chinese Assembly Halls in Malaysia (Huazong) celebration were Transport Minister Anthony Loke; Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing; Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming; Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, and Huazong president Lim Kah Chuan. - Mkini
