BN should go solo in Malacca, Johor polls - Wee

MCA president Wee Ka Siong today said BN should contest the upcoming Malacca and Johor state elections under its own banner.

Wee, in his speech at MCA’s 77th anniversary celebration at Wisma MCA, said the party expects the Malacca election to be held this year, followed by the Johor election in early 2027, The Star reported.

“Today, I can state clearly that MCA’s position is that BN should contest the Malacca and Johor state elections under its own banner, independently,” he said.

Wee reportedly said that BN had won both Malacca and Johor in the previous elections, and so MCA’s call for the coalition to continue contesting under its own banner is both reasonable and justifiable.

The Johor MCA chief further instructed the state liaison committees in Malacca and Johor to immediately activate their election machinery and submit a proposed candidate list, a campaign committee line-up, and a comprehensive campaign strategy paper to the party’s headquarters within a month.

The strategy, he said, must cover key themes such as publicity, new media, training, polling, house visits, and preparations for polling and counting agents.

Based on the set strategies, Wee reportedly set two targets for the party and BN.

“MCA must win more state seats than in the previous election. Secondly, BN must win the state elections under its own banner.

“For now, we focus on the Malacca and Johor state elections and go all out in the fight. We will let the election results speak for themselves,” he said.

Harapan-BN cracks

In Malacca, MCA holds two seats, while its partners Umno and MIC hold 18 and one, respectively.

In Johor, MCA holds four seats, MIC three, and Umno 33.

Yesterday, Johor Umno deputy chairperson Ahmad Maslan said no formal negotiations over seat allocations or pre-election pacts have commenced ahead of the state election due by next year.

Johor BN has been at odds with its Harapan counterparts, particularly Amanah, as the latter had repeatedly declared its readiness to contest all state seats, including those held by Umno. - Mkini
