Held at gunpoint: Albert Tei's wife seeks IGP's assistance for case update

A lawyer representing the wife of businessperson Albert Tei has sent a legal letter to the inspector-general of police, seeking an update on the police’s investigation into an MACC raid on the couple’s residence in Puchong last year.

Mahajoth Singh claimed that the police and their investigating officer handling the probe have failed to update Tei’s wife, Lee Pei Rie, since she lodged a report on the manner of the MACC operation in November.

Lee (above, centre) had claimed that the MACC used excessive force, including pointing a pistol at her family.

“Despite four months having passed since the date the report was lodged, neither the case investigating officer nor the Sepang district police chief has provided any update on this case.

“This was despite Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar having given his assurance on Dec 15 last year that police investigation into the incident would be carried out in a transparent and professional manner.

“Therefore, we humbly seek your assistance to get the relevant parties to provide our client an update on the status of the investigation without delay,” said Mahajoth, who is from legal firm Abd Halim Ushah and Associates.

Full tactical gear

On Nov 28 last year, a team of MACC officers in full tactical gear - including bulletproof vests and balaclavas - raided Tei’s home and escorted him into an unmarked black sedan.

Lee later raised concerns over the manner of the operation, claiming the raiding party barged into their home through the main door before several of them put handcuffs on Tei.

She had also lodged a police report claiming MACC officers pointed a gun at both of them during the raid.

According to the report, Lee rushed downstairs to the living room at 10am upon realising a group of people had broken into the house, and found her husband lying on the floor, accompanied by armed MACC officers.

“One of those individuals realised my presence and pointed a pistol at me. At the time, I was holding my phone to record the incident because I was concerned for the safety of myself and my family, who were in the house during the incident.

“The armed individual pointing a pistol at me then forced me to hand over my phone,” she said.

She claimed her phone was handed to another officer, who forced her to unlock the phone, and then deleted the video.

Lee claimed the officer then ordered her to bring all other people in her household, except for a sick child, to gather in the living room. They were then forced to unlock all the phones the MACC officers had found.

The MACC officers then supposedly confiscated their home’s CCTV decoder and left with Tei at 10.50am, only to return about 10 minutes later.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki had since denied that his officers pointed a weapon at Tei’s head during his arrest, and said the arrest was conducted in accordance with established procedures. - Mkini
