FORMER UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin or KJ has indicated his intention to return to UMNO four years after being expelled.
During his Keluar Sekejap podcast, he revealed that preparations are underway to submit a formal application to rejoin the party under the ‘Rumah Bangsa’ initiative.
“I see this as a positive development and a good opportunity for me personally. My press secretary Bobby (Raja Syahrir Raja Abu Bakar) can start drafting the letter. I want to review the draft,” he said.
The programme, introduced by UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, allows former members who were expelled or suspended to apply for reinstatement.
The initiative is overseen by a committee chaired by UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, which will manage applications according to party procedures and its constitution.
In January 2023, UMNO expelled Khairy, suspended Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Shahril Hamdan, suspended Tebrau chief Datuk Maulizan Bujang for six years; and expelled five Pasir Gudang, nine Putrajaya, two Tanjong Karang and 26 Pahang members.
Meanwhile, former UMNO Supreme Council member Isham Jalil has rejected the initiative.
Isham, who was expelled from UMNO in 2023, said he is not interested in joining the initiative because it remains within the framework of the Madani Government, which he believes still reflects UMNO’s cooperation with DAP.
“Apologise to them (those fired) before inviting them back to UMNO if they wish to return. As for me, there is no need to invite or meet me because I have said many times that as long as he cooperates with DAP, I will not join.
“That’s final. There is no need to keep asking me this question because my answer will remain the same,” he said in a statement on Facebook. — Focus Malaysia
