JOHOR BARU: The lively Chingay parade quietened down as it passed by mosques here in a show of interfaith respect.
The parade, which set off at 7.20pm on Monday (March 9), passed by several mosques along the 8km route.
Police officers on duty were seen raising "quiet" signs and the tens of thousands of participants and spectators stopped beating on drums and turned down the music during evening and terawih prayers.
Some spectators asked lion dance troupes to continue their performance but the groups declined, citing the need to "respect religious sites and Ramadan."
After passing the mosques, the parade resumed its liveliness.
Starting from the Xing Gong Temple in Jalan Ulu Air Molek, the procession passed in front of several mosques including Masjid Kampung Mahmoodiah, Masjid India and Masjid Habib Hassan Al-Attas.
The event was approved with an additional "zero-noise" condition as Muslims observe the holy month of Ramadan. - Star
