Don't let it reach a stage where emergency is declared, cautions PAS

PAS has urged all parties not to take the law into their own hands, warning that such actions could lead to a situation where a state of emergency has to be declared.

“It must be remembered that when a country begins to experience unrest and chaos, certain parties may take advantage of the turmoil to advance their own agendas. Such a situation must not be allowed to continue to the point that it threatens public safety and national stability.

“The country must not be allowed to reach a stage where a state of emergency has to be declared. If the situation becomes uncontrollable and leads to an emergency, the people and the nation as a whole will suffer significant losses in terms of stability, the economy, and social life.

“Therefore, all parties must act rationally and responsibly to ensure that the country’s peace and stability are preserved,” PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said in a statement.

The Pasir Mas MP also urged the authorities to take swift action to detain those responsible for attacking the home and damaging the cars of a self-proclaimed social activist known as Cikgu Chandra, who has been vocal in campaigning against unauthorised Hindu temples.

“Such extreme behaviour is unacceptable in a country founded on the rule of law and peace. All parties and members of the public are urged to remain calm and refrain from acting beyond the bounds of reason.

“The authorities must carry out an investigation that is prompt, transparent and thorough. The individuals or groups involved must be identified and brought before the courts so that justice can be upheld and serve as a lesson to others not to engage in similar acts,” he added.

Reports, protests, arrests

Police reports have also been lodged against self-proclaimed land activist Tamim Dahri Abdul Razak after a video clip of him allegedly desecrating a sacred Hindu symbol surfaced online.

A protest was also held outside the Sentul district police headquarters last night, which Pertubuhan Perpaduan Puratchi Malaysia founder K Umagandhan claimed was attended by about 200 people from across the country.

Previously, a university student, S Vikneswaran, was charged after posting a photograph desecrating the Quran.

Yesterday, DAP chairperson Gobind Singh Deo urged the Attorney-General’s Chambers to provide an “immediate and clear” explanation on the lack of prosecution against those who have threatened to unilaterally demolish places of worship.

Gobind, who is also the digital minister, claimed that despite the lodging of numerous police reports, there appears to be a “total lack of follow-up action” from authorities. - FMT
