BUKIT MERTAJAM: Four friends who surrendered to police early this morning have been remanded for two days to assist investigations into the alleged attack on independent preacher Zamri Vinoth.

This brings the total number of people detained in connection with the incident to six.

Magistrate Roshayati Radellah granted the remand order after police applied for four days to facilitate their investigation.

Earlier, the four – two engineers, a technician and a van driver, aged between their 20s and 30s – arrived at the Bukit Mertajam court around 8.35am in a police van.

All were handcuffed and dressed in orange and purple lock-up attire.

The four had presented themselves at a police station earlier this morning before being detained.

According to their lawyer V. Parthipan, they showed the magistrate video footage of the alleged attack, which has since gone viral.

"The complainant claimed that his attackers were holding stones and sticks, but the video footage clearly showed no one holding anything.

"The footage also showed that everyone was concentrating on the driver's side of the car, but the damage was clearly on the left side," he told reporters later.

Parthipan, who represented the four together with K. Puvirajan and T. Turuvandran, also submitted that Section 506 of the Penal Code, relating to criminal intimidation, did not apply in this case.

"The complainant said he was scared, but he could clearly produce a TikTok video outside the police station. Clearly, he was not in fear," he added.

Parthipan said his clients had also lodged a report against Zamri.

"My clients cooperated fully. They surrendered this morning to assist in the probe into the incident," he said.

Prior to this, two brothers were remanded separately; both have since been released.

Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail confirmed receiving a report from Zamri over the alleged attack. - FMT
