Tow truck operators to go on 3-day strike, demand diesel subsidies

KUALA LUMPUR: Tow truck services are expected to be disrupted for three days from tomorrow as operators will go on strike to urge the government to provide diesel subsidies.

A notice issued by insurance company Zurich Takaful said the Klang Valley is expected to be among the areas most affected, with the possibility that the strike will also impact other states across the peninsula.

It said operating hours for internal tow trucks will be extended to assist customers, with scheduled services being carried out based on service availability.

Additionally, it said customers may also arrange for their own tow trucks via third parties due to the service disruption, with reimbursements to be claimed according to the established terms and conditions.

Meanwhile, Persatuan Wakil Takaful Am Muslim (Perwatam) urged the government to immediately make improvements to the diesel subsidy mechanism, to ensure that the tow truck industry services do not collapse.

Perwatam president Datuk Khairi Anuar Ahmad, in a statement, said more realistic policy support is urgently needed to ensure the tow truck industry continues to operate.

"Perwatam emphasises that immediate action without compromise must be implemented by all parties.

"Any further delay is unacceptable and will only worsen the situation, as well as undermine public confidence in the insurance and takaful protection system in Malaysia," he said.

At the same time, Khairi said Perwatam is also urging all general insurance and takaful operating companies to immediately review and adjust the payment rates for tow assistance operators.

He said this is because existing charges do not reflect actual operating costs, and the failure to adjust tariffs undermines the ability of operators to function effectively, subsequently causing delays in assistance, service disruptions, and increased safety risks for customers on the ground. - NST
