Moving more at work: Trainers call for mobility-focused office routines

THE Association for Certified Trainers in Fitness (ACTIF) is calling on Malaysian employers and employees to place greater emphasis on mobility-focused exercises as part of daily workplace routines, amid growing concerns about the long-term health impacts of a sedentary work culture.

With Malaysians increasingly working long hours seated in front of computers, ACTIF highlighted that reduced physical movement is contributing to a rise in musculoskeletal disorders, poor posture, reduced flexibility and an increased risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

These concerns align with findings from the National Health and Morbidity Survey, which show a growing prevalence of conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol among Malaysian adults.

“Mobility is a critical yet often neglected aspect of fitness, particularly for office workers who spend prolonged periods sitting,” said ACTIF president Husaini Mohd Yusoff.

He noted that prolonged sitting in front of computers increases the risk of musculoskeletal disorders, which can lead to chronic pain, reduced mobility and lower productivity.

“Simple mobility-focused exercises incorporated into the workday can significantly improve joint health, reduce discomfort and enhance overall productivity,” he added.

It is not about intensity, but consistency. Small movements done regularly can have a profound impact.”

As part of its advocacy efforts, ACTIF recently conducted a mobility-focused session for employees of Datametrics Research and Information Centre (DARE), an independent market research agency.

The session, led by ACTIF vice-president Shaiful Nizam Omar, provided practical, easy-to-implement techniques tailored for office environments, including desk-based stretches, posture-correction exercises, and short mobility routines during work breaks.

Employees were guided through targeted exercises addressing common pain points such as the neck, shoulders, lower back and hips—areas most affected by prolonged sitting.

The session also emphasised the importance of regular movement intervals and ergonomic awareness in preventing long-term injury.

“We found the session highly relevant and beneficial for our team,” said DARE general manager Dexter Lee.

“ACTIF’s approach was practical and accessible, showing that improving mobility does not require a major overhaul of one’s schedule. These are small, sustainable habits that can be seamlessly integrated into the workday.”

ACTIF said its efforts to promote mobility-focused exercises in office environments align with Malaysia’s broader national health agenda, which increasingly emphasises prevention and healthier lifestyles as key strategies to address rising healthcare costs and chronic disease burdens.

The association has consistently advocated preventive health measures, highlighting the need for collective action across workplaces, communities and policymakers to improve public health outcomes.

ACTIF is a professional body committed to elevating standards within the fitness industry while promoting evidence-based training practices and healthier communities.

Through its outreach programmes, collaborations and public education efforts, it plays an active role in supporting Malaysia’s shift towards preventive healthcare. ‒  Focus Malaysia
