Cheaper cars, subsidies among Harapan's plan to tackle living cost

Pakatan Harapan tonight unveiled its 138-page manifesto, which among others, detailed the opposition coalition's plan to tackle the rising cost of living, if it captures Putrajaya.
The most well-known pledge is to abolish the Goods and Services Tax (GST), but the manifesto included several other measures not previously publicised.
Among them include a plan to slash the excise tax for those purchasing their first car.
The policy will be for cars under 1,600cc and for those with a household income of no more than RM8,000.
The manifesto also proposed introducing a monthly quota of fuel subsidy to targeted groups.
The fuel subsidy will be for motorcycles with an engine of under 125cc and cars with an engine of under 1,300cc.
Harapan also seeks to introduce an RM100 pass in cities that would enable people to utilise any public transportation.
Apart from these measures, the coalition also reiterated its long-standing plan to do away with tolls in phases.
Off the road, Harapan also proposed various measures to deal with the cost of living, including healthcare cost.
It plans to introduce an RM500 annual voucher that would enable those from the B40 to seek basic health care at clinics.
The manifesto also proposed increasing the disposable income and savings of citizens.
Among the measures is to delay the Higher Education Loan Fund (PTPTN) repayment until one has achieved a salary of RM4,000.
A Harapan government will also offer tax incentives to employers to help pay their employee's PTPTN loan without a salary deduction.
Harapan also wants to increase the minimum wage to RM1,500 and equalise it between East and West Malaysia.
In terms of savings, husbands can contribute an additional two percent of their salary to the Employees Provident Fund for their wife.
In exchange, the government will also contribute RM50 per month. -Mkini
