DAP's Liew for Ayer Hitam – MCA No 2 says 'let it be'

MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong opted for a diplomatic response to DAP's election committee endorsing the party's Johor chief Liew Chin Tong to contest in the Ayer Hitam parliamentary seat.
“Let it be,” Wee told Malaysiakini when asked for his comment.
“The 14th general election is not an easy task, for we have to face whatever that comes our way. I will try my best. Whoever comes (to contest), I always say this - I will try my best,” he added.
Wee, a three-term Ayer Hitam incumbent, also declined to speculate on whether Dr Mahathir Mohamad (photo) would have an impact in the constituency, given that it is a Malay-majority seat.
“We will wait and see,” he replied when asked if the former prime minister could influence voters and affect his chances of retaining the seat.
“We have worked in the constituency for many years. We know how the voters think,” he added, without elaborating.
The birthplace of Umno
Mahathir's Bersatu has poised itself as an alternative to Umno and aims to conquer Johor, which is the birthplace of Umno.
Earlier, Malaysiakini reported that Liew, who is the current Kluang MP, would be contesting in Ayer Hitam. Kluang is a Chinese majority seat.
DAP's election committee comprises secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang, chairperson Tan Kok Wai, deputy chairperson Gobind Singh Deo and vice-chairperson M Kulasegaran.
The committee is empowered by the central executive committee (CEC) to decide on candidates.
According to DAP insiders, Liew had offered himself to switch seats and contest in Ayer Hitam, despite the risks.
Malaysiakini also learned that Guan Eng has reservations over this move.
Wee is well liked in the constituency and managed to retain the semi-urban seat with a 7,310-vote majority in the last general election. -Mkini
