Khalid Samad fails to settle defamation suit against Jais event speaker

Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad today failed to settle a defamation suit filed against the chief executive officer of Malaysia Islamic Strategic Research Institute (Iksim), Mahamad Naser Disa.
This follows a failed mediation held before Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Justice Rohani Ismail, which both Khalid and Naser were present at.
This was disclosed by Khalid's lawyer Faiz Fadzil.
Following this, Justice Rohani has fixed May 30 for the decision on Naser's application to strike out the suit.
Khalid, who is Amanah communications director, filed the suit against Naser following a talk he held at a mosque in Bukit Jelutong.
The talk was given as part of a Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) programme on Sept 28 last year.
In the talk, Naser had alleged that the Shah Alam MP had allegedly prevented the tabling of the proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, otherwise known as Act 355.
Naser was quoted as saying in video footage of the talk: “One of the reasons why Act 355 could not be amended was because the people (voters) in Shah Alam had sent (to Parliament) an MP who objected to Act 355. So what to do?"
Following the remarks, Khalid sent a letter of demand to Naser seeking an apology. The latter failed to do so, resulting in the suit.
Iksim describes itself on its website as an apolitical body formed with the approval of the Rulers' Council. It is tasked with uplifting Islam as the official religion of the country. -Mkini
