KUALA LUMPUR: Former Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah stressed today that her decision to join politics is her own and has nothing to do with the election reform group that she had led for many years.
She urged everyone to respect her decision.
“It is my personal decision and must not be associated with Bersih.
“If the opposition attended Bersih’s programmes, it was because they supported our agenda. It does not mean Bersih supports the opposition’s agenda.
“They support us, that’s why they came. Barisan Nasional did not support, so they did not come,” she told reporters when met outside the High Court here.
Maria announced her resignation from Bersih 2.0 yesterday and offered herself as an independent candidate to contest a parliamentary seat in the 14th general election under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner.
She made it clear she would not join any political party.
PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad, in an immediate response, said the coalition would discuss her request.
Maria also said Bersih would continue to pursue its cause for clean and fair elections after her departure and it looked forward to playing such a role in the coming polls.
“That is Bersih’s agenda. All that Bersih does is transparent,” she said.
Meanwhile, commenting on Maria’s decision to join politics, Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Yunos claimed she would not receive any support if she contested in GE14.
“Nobody will give her their vote. Perhaps, if she stands in the jungle, the monkeys may vote for her,” he said. -FMT
