Najib gets airtime at Asean summit protest, thanks to Bersih

A group of Bersih supporters in Sydney today joined a rally against the Asean summit with Australia this weekend, highlighting issues related to Prime Minister Najib Razak and Malaysia.
According to Bersih Sydney secretary Jason Goh, the participants, some of whom donned the trademark yellow Bersih T-shirt, were part of a rally protesting various Asean human rights issues.
“Yes, we had a small Malaysian representation at the Asean summit rally today in Sydney.
“(It was) attended by (roughly 1,000) people representing different countries of Asean, championing various human rights issues,” said Goh in a message.
He said the rally was held in two locations, Sydney Town Hall Square and Hyde Park.
Photographs sent by Goh showed, among others, participants holding placards condemning Najib and calling for free and fair elections.
Participants from other Asean countries were also depicted protesting the Rohingya genocide and Vietnamese issues.
The rally is being held to greet the inaugural Asean-Australia Special Summit 2018, which began today at the Sydney International Convention Centre (ICC).
Najib, who arrived at the summit in the midst of growing international controversy over the 1MDB scandal, gave the keynote speech today at the closing ceremony of the Counter-Terrorism Conference, a major lead-in event for the summit. -Mkini
