Lim Guan Eng says assemblywoman going for studies overseas was in fact placed in charge of disbursement of flood aid recently.
GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today slammed The Star over a report that Pulau Tikus assemblywoman Yap Soo Huey, who will not defend her seat in the 14th general election (GE14), had fallen out of favour with the state government.
Yap yesterday announced she would be heading to the United States this August to further her studies.
“Can you tell me when she was in the bad books of the state government? This is something new to us.
“Tell me, which state leader is she not on good terms with? Don’t simply invent stories.
“This is just a figment of the imagination,” he told a press conference when asked to comment on an article in the newspaper today.
Lim said he was with Yap in Hong Seng estate last October to check on six houses which were flooded due to a damaged underground drain.
The DAP secretary-general also said Yap had also been placed in charge of the applications and disbursement of flood aid to those affected by the devastating floods in November.
Yap told FMT yesterday she had applied to eight universities in the US. Six accepted her application and four offered her scholarships.
She said she would spend at least three years pursuing her Master’s in Urban and Transport Planning and would consider studying for another master’s degree in public policy.
Yap said she had not decided which university to choose but had shortlisted two — Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, or Cornell University in New York.
The 36-year-old graduated with a Bachelor in Science in Biotechnology (Hons) from Monash University in 2005.
She first served the Penang government as the science, technology and innovation officer in the chief minister’s office.
In the 2013 polls, Yap won the Pulau Tikus seat with 11,256 votes, defeating her Gerakan opponent, Rowena Yam, by 8,220 votes.
On the national stage, Yap is a DAP Wanita executive council member. -FMT
