A coalition of student groups have threatened to stage a protest against Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia over its decision to reinstate a one-month suspension order against student Asheeq Ali Sethi Alivi.
Kesatuan Mahasiswa Malaysia spokesperson Anis Syafiqah Md Yusof said they have given UKM's administration one week from today to withdraw Asheeq's suspension, issued in relation to his role in organising the 2016 "Tangkap Malaysian Official 1" rally in Kuala Lumpur.
"If there is no response from UKM in a week from now, students will not hesitate to hold a protest outside the campus in order to put pressure (on university authorities)," Anis Syafiqah told a joint press conference with Asheeq and other student leaders in Petaling Jaya today.
She pointed out that if UKM suspends Asheeq until April 13, the law student would be prevented from sitting for his final year exams, and would not graduate in time.
"Kesatuan urges UKM to withdraw the suspension against Asheeq, and also we demand all universities in Malaysia to stop victimising students.
"We will continue to protest until UKM withdraws the suspension, and admits that participation in a peaceful assembly outside campus is not an offence," said Anis Syafiqah, who also led the "Tangkap MO1" rally.
Asheeq (photo) said he would now use his month under suspension to continue campaigning against the University and University Colleges Act (UUCA) 1971.
"We (students) will bring forward our agenda and we want both the governemnt and opposition to take into account our demands," he said.
The "Tangkap MO1" rally was organised following the US Department of Justice's court filing in June 2016, which said that “Malaysian Official 1” received US$731 million that originated from 1MDB.
The UKM disciplinary board had in November 2016 suspended Asheeq after they found him guilty of participating in the rally held in August the same year.
At the time, Asheeq had served three weeks of his one-semester suspension, pending an appeal to the board, before he proceeded to file a case against UKM in court.
In his originating summons, Asheeq had sought a declaration against UKM that Section 15(3) of the UUCA and Rules 3 & 13 of UKM Disciplinary Rules were unconstitutional for preventing students from expressing their thoughts freely.
On Aug 28 last year, High Court judge S Nantha Balan dismissed the originating summons filed by Asheeq after finding that the application had no merit.
His suspension was also upheld by a three-member Court of Appeal bench chaired by Rohana Yusof last month.
Citing the Court of Appeal judgement, UKM then moved to reinstate Asheeq's suspension order and RM200 fine. -Mkini
