'Waterless' minister pans Harapan's 'free water' bait for Johor

Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein is confident that Johoreans will not fall for Pakatan Harapan's promises in its manifesto for the 14th general election, which includes free water.
“... Whatever was promised in their previous manifesto have not been delivered. How are we to believe what is put forth now (in the new manifesto),” he told reporters in Parliament.
The Umno vice-president, who is also the MP for Sembrong in Johor, reminded Harapan not to make promises it cannot deliver.
Sharing his own experience, Hishammuddin revealed how there is no water at his residence in Selangor.
“I wish to remind them (Harapan) that back then they promised free water in Selangor but now my house in Taman TAR (Ampang Jaya) has no water.
“I, the defence minister, am one of the victims of their empty promises,” he said.
Water supply for Kuala Lumpur and six areas in Selangor have been affected since Tuesday and the situation is expected to continue until the weekend.
In a related development, a DAP assemblyperson said he is disappointed with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for politicising the water shortage issue.
Kampung Tunku assemblyperson Lau Weng San (photo) said in a statement that the burst Surge Vessel System at the Sungai Selangor Phase 3 water treatment plant was still under the management of Splash, which is yet to be fully taken over by the Selangor state government under its restructuring plan.
“This was because the (takeover) price has yet to be agreed upon.
“The Selangor state government is of the view that Splash’s offer is too high and unreasonable,” said Lau who pointed out that the federal government had yet to reveal the outcome of an independent valuation conducted to determine a new offer price.
“So, in terms of management, including all assets owned by Splash, Air Selangor has been unable to do its necessary duties, including the long overdue maintenance work,” he said.
Lau, therefore, called upon Najib to instruct the relevant officers to make public the outcome of their independent evaluation, to proceed as the facilitator for the negotiation process and finalise the takeover deal in order to resolve the problem of water supply in Selangor. -Mkini
