sabah-quake

KUALA LUMPUR: A weak earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale hit Ranau, Sabah, at 7.46pm tonight.
According to a Meteorological Department statement, it occurred at 6.0 degrees north and 116.6 degrees east.
“Tremors were felt in Ranau,” it said.
On Thursday, the hilly district was jolted by a moderate 5.2 temblor, followed by another measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale the day after.
Yesterday, the first group of Malaysian climbers ascended the 4,095-metre Mount Kinabalu at around 8.30am after climbing activity suspension was lifted following the 5.2 magnitude earthquake on Thursday night.
Sabah Parks director Dr Jamili Nais said he met the group upon reaching Timpohon Gate, the starting point of the climb, after spending a night at Panalaban, the transit point at 3,272 metres above sea level.
However, he was unable to ascertain the number of climbers.
Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Masidi Manjun had announced the suspension of all climbing activities on the mountain following the earthquake on Thursday.
A total of 239 people, including 130 climbers were at Panalaban during the incident and were brought down with the help of Mountain Search and Rescue (Mosar) personnel and mountain guides that same night.
No injuries or fatalities were reported following that quake.
Tthe suspension was lifted yesterday after a 47-member team assessing the aftermath on the mountain found no major damage along the summit trail. -FMT
