MCA Alor Gajah has questioned where Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's political aide Wong Nai Chee was, when Tourism and Culture Minister Mohamed Nazri Aziz purportedly insulted the Chinese community.
The division also expressed doubts about Wong's political contributions in the past, and asked what right he had to contest in the Malacca parliamentary seat.
This follows a report that Wong could replace Alor Gajah incumbent MP Koh Nai Kwong in the coming general election.
"If you want to be a candidate, come and serve, and perform first.
"As the PM's Chinese political secretary, what have you done? (Have you) solved any Chinese issues?
"Even if we don't look at the issues of the past, what has Wong done during the recent Nazri's 'dog' remark?" MCA Alor Gajah division secretary Chew Chong Lin told reporters yesterday, after attending a rally in support of Koh.
Chew was referring to Nazri criticising billionaire Robert Kuok last month and likening him to a "dog that bites its master".
Nazri's remarks invited brickbats from MCA, but the Umno leader has refused to apologise.
Boycott threat
Chew pointed out that Koh, whom he described as diligent in serving the people and loved by the locals, was being treated unfairly.
If Koh is not fielded in Alor Gajah, the MCA division may not contribute to the election campaign for any other candidate, he added.
Out of 38 MCA Alor Gajah branches, only six have expressed neutrality and would support any BN candidate, while 32 branches remain adamant that they want Koh to defend his seat, said Chew.
"If Koh is poor in health, or he has scandals, then to replace him is no big deal. But he is too hardworking. He would solve most of the voters' complains.
"Normally, if another candidate (were to contest here), would you still have the mood to help? I believe it is impossible. We have lost our morale," he said.
Chew also reminded the MCA leadership that the opposition would be happy to see MCA get into chaos.
He urged MCA president Liow Tiong Lai and Najib to listen to the grassroots and not to replace Koh.
"What has Koh done wrong? Why do you want to replace him? Wouldn't it weaken the whole team?
"BN is in an uncertain situation. I think this (move) is dangerous. I hope the PM will take our opinion seriously."
Koh’s supporters would continue with their signature campaign in support of Koh across Alor Gajah, Chew said, adding that they would submit the petition to Najib once they hit their target. -Mkini
