Federal Reserve Unit deployed after voters refuse to leave polling centre.
PETALING JAYA: About 100 voters out of 648 voters from Saluran 4 were asked to leave the polling centre at SK Taman Dato Harun (1) at 5pm.
The voters, however, insisted they wanted to vote even though it was past the 5pm deadline for voting.
Petaling Jaya candidate Maria Chin Abdullah held negotiations with Election Commission (EC) officials but they did not allow her request for the group to vote.
Chin claimed this was an attempt to sabotage the voting process as too many voters were packed into one “saluran” (stream).
“It is a blatant attempt to prevent voters from voting. This will result in a low voter turnout.
“To pack 648 voters into one ‘saluran’ … they knew they would never make it in time by 5pm.”
Taman Medan PKR election director Mahharul Ismail said the maximum number of voters in the stream should have been 400.
A voter said each person took 10 minutes to complete the voting process.
“That is just too long. Some of us came at 8.30am, but only got to vote at 11.30am. Why the long wait?”
Another voter present said it looked like the EC was purposely slowing down the election process. - FMT
