GE14 | Caretaker minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan finds it amusing that certain Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) leaders have pledged their support for Pakatan Harapan.
Sharing his views on Twitter with the hashtag “#sillyseason”, he noted the opposition coalition's prime minister candidate Dr Mahathir Mohamad is known to be the “worst union buster”.
“In GE13, certain top leaders in MTUC had shown an inclination towards the opposition and yet BN still prevailed,” he said.
Earlier today, MTUC secretary-general J Solomon urged the nation's 14 million-strong workforce to cast their ballots for Harapan tomorrow.
He said doing so would send the message that workers are key to the economy and "should never be ignored".
"Workers have the power to vote out any government that is anti-labour and kleptocratic because the workers' voice and strength are sacred and powerful.
"We want a government that gives us equal respect in a tripartite body so that workers can have an equitable share in the wealth of the nation," he added.
Solomon's call appeared to contradict MTUC president Abdul Halim Mansor's praise for caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak six days ago.
In a Utusan Online report, Abdul Halim lauded Najib for defending minimum wage during his tenure.
“We see that the (caretaker) prime minister is concerned that the welfare of workers is safeguarded.
“For example, in the issue of minimum wage, MTUC has struggled for this for so long and there was no impact. But it was a new chapter under Najib's administration.
“Not only minimum wage but also the establishment of the National Wage Consultative Act which can be reviewed every two years,” he added. - Mkini
