PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has defended Lim Guan Eng’s appointment as finance minister.
“We believe in his record in governing Penang, he ensured every project was open tender.
“If you want to appoint, sure, I say let’s discuss first. (But) some people say cannot because it is DAP. What is this?” he said in his first public speech since his pardon this morning.
Anwar was addressing over 5,000 of his supporters who had gathered in Padang Timur, Petaling Jaya to hear him speak.
He also assured that the positions of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) and Universiti Technology Mara (UiTM) would not be threatened.
“Why are you so scared? You weren’t angry at a thief, you weren’t angry when billions of ringgit disappeared.
“You are angry because his name is Lim Guan Eng. If his name is 'Mat Sabit', he could clean out billions of ringgit and it would be fine,” he quipped.
Bears, elephants and snakes
Anwar then advised Lim to be cautious as the finance minister as he will face many obstacles.
“All sorts will come your way. Bears, elephants, snakes,” he said.
Lim being announced for the finance portfolio has drawn criticism from various quarters, as the former Penang chief minister is currently facing corruption charges.
However, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said that the DAP secretary-general must clear his name before being sworn in as finance minister.
Anwar was freed this morning after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong granted him a full pardon.
The appeal for pardon was made on grounds that there was a miscarriage of justice. -Mkini
