SUNGAI SIPUT – PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail described the show of support by Umno veterans Rafidah Aziz, Rais Yatim and Daim Zainuddin for Pakatan Harapan as a right guaranteed by the country’s democratic process.
She described the trio and PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad as having once been “the pillars of BN”.
“Someone like Rafidah, who has been a very prominent minister, should be allowed to choose who she wants to support. They have all served the country, so let them have a choice,” she said at a ceramah in Felda Lasah, here today. “It is a basic right for anyone to choose who to support. This is the essence of democracy.”
Earlier today Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Mansor said that Umno could take action against the three party veterans for their open criticism of Barisan Nasional and that it was “up to him to take action”.
Tengku Adnan said the trio could be expelled from the party.
Wan Azizah said in response: “It’s their party, so if they are sacked then it’s a party decision.”
On Tuesday Rafidah had said in a Facebook posting that Malaysians should reject BN and pass the mandate to Pakatan Harapan to administer the country.
Daim, a former finance minister in Mahathir’s government, endorsed Mahathir and several other PH candidates, turning up at their constituency events to show his support.
Former minister Rais recently criticised the Election Commission for removing Mahathir’s image from opposition billboards while allowing BN billboards which featured Chinese President Xi Jinping on posters for MCA president Liow Tiong Lai.
