Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan, known for his aggressive defence of the goods and services tax (GST) when he was deputy finance minister, likened his party to a sunken ship.
However, he said if the party stood united, it may not be the opposition for long.
“With Allah’s grace, we may not be the opposition for long like in states where we lost but won back.
“We are confident for Malaysia, even though we lost, we can win it back,” he said in a video published by Umno Online.
BN lost Terengganu in 1999 but recaptured the state in 2004. It also lost Perak and Kedah in 2008 but won the states in 2013.
However, this is the first time it lost the federal government after Pakatan Harapan and its allies ended BN’s 61 years in power.
It also lost all states except Perlis and Pahang in the May 9 general election.
Sarawak holds its state election separate from the general election.
“Let us put our trust in (Umno vice-presidents) Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Hishammuddin Hussein to manage and lead this party.
“With strong support, God willing, our party, which is now like a sunken ship, can be raised to the surface of the water and its contents saved,” he said.
Ahmad Maslan said with 122 seats secured by Harapan and its allies, it was not a major win.
“Therefore they cannot chest thump and they must fulfil their manifesto which promises the moon and stars.
“If they fail, then the people will surely rise up and change the government,” he said.
