DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang believed that Malaysians who voted out BN in the recently concluded general election did so because they were chasing the "Malaysian Dream".
In an interview with the BFM business radio station today, Lim said Malaysians of all races, languages and cultures had come together to fulfil what Tunku Abdul Rahman had envisaged.
"Tunku (once urged Malaysians to become) the beacon of light in a troubled and difficult world […] This time, we've become that beacon of light," he said.
When asked what kept him going as an opposition leader for over 50 years, Lim said he had made a life commitment to pursue the "Malaysian Dream".
"We are Malaysians. We should do something to make Malaysia a better place and I think that's inherent in most Malaysians. This election shows that.
"In my case, it was a lifetime commitment but all Malaysians want to see a better Malaysia. It's part of the 'Malaysian Dream'," he said.
He said Pakatan Harapan had embodied the aspirations of Malaysians and he believed that the "Malaysian Dream" will hold the coalition together.
"Just as it is not possible for anybody to think that we (the Pakatan Harapan coalition) would have won on May 9, there is no reason why we should not succeed.
"Bearing in mind that we must never allow our differences to reach a point where we disintegrate and we fail. We've come together with one objective, to rebuild Malaysia," he said.
Lim said that the country will need an independent media, a robust civil society and a strong opposition to provide the necessary check-and-balance to the new government.
"I am prepared to give free tuition to Umno and MCA on how to be a constructive and effective opposition," said Lim, who has spent 10 terms as opposition MP since 1969. -Mkini
