'How do cops know Dr M’s jet sabotage claim is fake news?'

GE14 | Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin has expressed his disbelief at the police’s move to investigate Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad under the Anti-Fake News Act 2018.
It was reported earlier today that the nonagenarian is being probed by KL police for spreading "fake news" over his claim that a chartered private plane had previously been sabotaged.
Daim, a former colleague of Mahathir’s who has now joined the Harapan campaign trail, disputed the labelling of the plane sabotage claim as fake news.
“How do they know it's fake news? How can you say it's fake news when the (plane’s) tyres had problems?
“A plane is not like a bicycle or a car, once you are in the air, your life is in the hands of a pilot. It’s very dangerous.
“I can’t believe that they want to investigate Mahathir (over this),” he said when asked after an event in Lembah Pantai tonight.
Daim also questioned the police’s expertise in aviation matters.
“Normally it’s not the police, it (investigations) should be headed by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM). It’s under their jurisdiction.
“The police don’t have the expertise (in these matters),” he added.
Earlier today, KL police chief Mazlan Lazim confirmed that Mahathir was being probed under the anti-fake news law.
"For the case on the fake news, it involves a claim by Mahathir that the jet which he had chartered to fly to Langkawi was sabotaged last Friday," he was quoted as saying by Bernama.
The law carries a jail sentence of up to six years or a fine of RM500,000 or both.
Last Friday, Mahathir who was to depart from Subang airport could not do so after the aircraft he charted faced tyre problems.
He later travelled on another aircraft after seeking help from a friend.
Upon arriving in Langkawi, Mahathir claimed the aircraft was sabotaged to thwart his candidacy in the parliamentary constituency the following day. -Mkini
