Lim Kit Siang posed a slew of questions with regard to Umno seeking the return of what it claims to be election campaign funds which were in the process of being transferred to the new leadership following Najib Abdul Razak's resignation when the police seized it during an operation on May 18.
The police had seized 72 bags in total, 35 with cash in 26 different currencies amounting to RM114 million during the operation which targetted three units in Kuala Lumpur's Pavilion Residence, which are linked to the former premier.
Lim, who found Umno's request to be most intriguing, asked if the party knew how much it was claiming from the items seized.
“… and if it is unable to provide a list to enumerate the details on the total amount claimed, how can Umno lay any claim to the funds seized by the police?
“What about the 35 bags with jewellery and watches – is Umno laying a claim to them on the ground that they belonged to Umno?
“What about the 284 boxes of designer handbags – is Umno laying a claim to them as well?” he added.
Lim also questioned if Najib knew how much of the RM114 million were donations to Umno for the general election and if he doesn't, then what is the basis for Umno to make such a claim.
He also asked if Umno would submit a proper inventory to the police, which states the amount of donation from various individuals and for the latter to confirm the donations.
“If the monies seized by the police were donations for Umno for the 14th general election, why were they dispersed like ill-gotten proceeds in the various Pavilion Residences?
“Furthermore, if they were meant for Umno for the election, why were they still around after the elections were over?” he quizzed.
Lim also urged Najib to declare the total amount of donations collected by him for Umno for the polls. - Mkini
