Judge appointed to hear Streram's election petition

Justice Azimah Omar, a Shah Alam High Court judge, has been appointed as the election judge to hear PKR candidate for Rantau Dr S Streram's election petition against former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Mohamad Hasan and two others, including the Election Commission (EC).
An election judge is a person appointed by the chief justice to hear the petition.
Upon the hearing and disposal of election petition cases by an election judge, appeals will be heard directly at the Federal Court for finality.
Justice Azimah's appointment was disclosed by lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali, who is representing Streram, following case management today at the Seremban High Court.
According to Rafique, the Seremban High Court has instructed the senior federal counsels of the Attorney-General Chambers for the EC and Rantau returning officer Amino Agos Suyub to file their defence against Streram's claims of impropriety and abuse of power by both parties.
He added that Mohamad's lawyer was not present today, and that the court had fixed June 26 as case management.
It was previously reported that Streram had filed the petition on May 23, against Mohamad, Amino Agos and the EC.
The PKR member claimed he was wilfully obstructed and thereafter systematically deprived from submitting his nomination papers for the Rantau state seat in the 14th general election (GE14).
This is the first known election petition filed following GE14’s conclusion.
The EC had gazetted the Rantau results on May 3, with remaining state and parliamentary seats following suit on May 28.
Election petitions have to be filed within 21 days of the results being gazetted. - Mkini
