KUALA LUMPUR (May 26): Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said his second stint as Malaysia prime minister “is frightening” because he is now working in a very uncertain environment involving a new coalition government. Dr Mahathir said he has a much more difficult task now compared to 1981, when he first became the nation’s prime minister.
The Edge Malaysia business and investment weekly, in its latest May 28 – June 3, 2018 issue, quoted
Dr Mahathir as saying in an interview that in 1981, the government was intact as there was no change in government then.
“All I had to do was to fill in the (Cabinet) slots with names. Now, I have to structure the government to suit our (Pakatan Harapan) manifesto, and also to suit the people’s view of (what) the government (should be).
“It is frightening! It is a much more difficult task (than in 1981). I have to sit down and be briefed. And then I have to fill in posts with people I don’t know. It takes a lot of time (to put the new government in place). I don’t know about destiny, but I was practically forced to come back. So, I don’t know if it’s destiny or not but I have a duty,” Dr Mahathir said.
