Mavcom to probe AirAsia boss' claim it ordered GE14 flights cancelled

The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) said it will commence an investigation after AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes claimed the commission ordered him to cancel extra flights he introduced for the 14th general election.
"With reference to Fernandes' claim in a video dated May 13, 2017, the Mavcom considers these claims serious allegations.
"We have immediately commenced an investigation into these claims. We will keep members of the public informed," it said in a statement today.
Earlier today, Fernandes apologised for caving into pressure by endorsing former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak's general election campaign and fetching him with a BN theme aeroplane.
Fernandes said AirAsia had refused to ask AirAsia X chairperson Rafidah Aziz to resign despite Putrajaya pressuring him over her critical comments against the government.
Fernandes said he had further angered the then BN government when he introduced extra 120 flights to ferry additional 26,000 voters back home to vote in the May 9 general election.
This was on top of reducing the price of tickets.
"Within 24 hours, we were summoned by Mavcom, and told to cancel all those flights. That put us again under tremendous pressure.
"We had both Rafidah where we didn’t buckle and we have put in these extra flights to carry the rakyat home, at low fares.

"So, foolishly, I thought by doing the video, which I felt was fairly neutral and factual and the plane from Kota Kinabalu would appease the government and protect the jobs of our Allstars and more importantly, the very essence of allowing more than 80 million people to fly every year with low fares," he said.
BN's 61-year rule came to an end on May 9 after Pakatan Harapan swept into power.
BN only won 79 seats in the 222-member Dewan Rakyat. -Mkini
