MTUC's stand - Hours after sec-gen says vote Harapan, president backs BN

GE14 | The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) maintains its support for BN since caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has done a lot for the workers, according to its president Abdul Halim Mansor.
His statement comes hours after MTUC secretary-general J Solomon urged the nation's 14 million workforce to cast their ballots for Pakatan Harapan tomorrow.
Abdul Halim, however, accused some online portals of manipulating the statement and insisted that Solomon spoke in his capacity as National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) secretary-general.
"I have seen the statement issued by Solomon and it has been manipulated by some online portals as if trying to damage the good relationship between MTUC and the government.
"In a statement, Solomon did not mention that he was representing MTUC but instead it was made in his capacity as NUBE's rep. If it was for NUBE with its 20,000 members, then he is free to make any statement. It does not represent MTUC," he told the News Straits Times.
Apart from Malaysiakini, Solomon's statement was also reported by The Sun DailyThe Edge Markets and other press as well.
Solomon's media statement featured the letterhead of MTUC and he had signed off as the Congress' secretary-general. There was no mention of his NUBE position.
Malaysiakini's article titled “MTUC backs Harapan, urges 14 million workers to show their might” was also published on the Congress' official Facebook page and website.
Meanwhile, Abdul Halim said MTUC's policy required official statements to receive the approval of the general council and consent of the 200 unions affiliated to the organisation.
"In this case, the statement made by Solomon is about NUBE.
"So in my opinion, this is just a tactic used by some news portals to ensure better reach of the statement.
“Probably they feel it is better to use Solomon's position as MTUC secretary-general rather than NUBE's," he added.
Malaysiakini has contacted Solomon for comment and is awaiting his response.
