Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has rejected an appeal for "protection" from Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Yunos who went missing after promising to turn himself in to the police yesterday.
"What protection? He (Jamal) knows he has done something wrong and then he ran away," Muhyiddin told reporters after attending a Prisons Department breaking fast function at the Kajang Prison mosque tonight.
Muhyiddin said he has also asked Inspector-General of Police Fuzi Harun to track down Jamal who is being reportedly investigated for nine cases, including three of which he had been charged for last Friday at the Ampang Puteri Hospital.
In a statement earlier today, Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief Fadzil Ahmat confirmed that police are in the process of placing Jamal on an immigration travel ban following rumours that he could have escaped to Indonesia.
"I am asking the IGP to hunt him down. We heard he is in Indonesia (so) we need to ask for cooperation from the police there to find him and bring him back," said Muhyiddin.
"Whatever the offence, I leave it up to the police to take appropriate actions under the law," he added.
After failing to show up at the Ampang Jaya district police station yesterday, Jamal released a video recorded in an oil palm estate and stated that he was concerned he would be arrested.
In the seven-minute clip, Jamal, who accused the current government of victimising him, declared that he was neither a criminal nor a terrorist, but was being treated as such.
Personal plea
The firebrand politician also made a personal plea to Muhyiddin for a guarantee that he would not be victimised further.
"I beg the Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, to give me a guarantee that as a politician, as an activist, I will not be mistreated or victimised," said Jamal.
He also claimed that the MACC and police, under pressure by the new Pakatan Harapan government, had raided his home, his mother's home, his office, and other locations linked to him.
On May 25, Jamal went missing for the first time after being charged at the Ampang Puteri Hospital in Kuala Lumpur, with regard to a protest where he smashed beer bottles in front of the state secretariat building in Shah Alam.
His bail was being processed when he absconded.
The following day, he released an audio recording claiming that it was a misunderstanding. -Mkini
