Rais Yatim: Umno will become history

GE14 | Former minister Rais Yatim believes Umno will become history if it fails to reform, but fears that it is already too late for the party.

"I don't like to make predictions but my observation - it (Umno) will become history if it doesn't develop into something new quickly.

"But I think it is too late for them," he told journalists after attending a Pakatan Harapan ceramah in Titi, Jelebu.

Rais said he believed that the people have already made their decision, but thanked caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak for previously giving him the opportunity to serve.

The former Jelebu MP said he could not speak at the ceramah tonight, as the permit did not list him as a speaker. His appearance was only decided on at the last minute.

Asked if Rais would now embark on a national campaign for Pakatan Harapan like his fellow Umno veterans Daim Zainuddin and Rafidah Aziz, he said there was not enough time, with polling just three days away.

However, he said that he will do what he can in Negeri Sembilan.

"There isn't enough time, I will be in Jelebu and Negeri Sembilan.

"Everything can change, if the people feel that they are not treated fairly.

"No matter how much money is offered to us, that is the government's money, so take it, but our heart must be for good," he said.

Rais said he has also advised Harapan to step up its efforts in more rural places.

Yesterday, Daim and Rafidah were sacked from Umno for campaigning for the opposition pact.

Rais, meanwhile, faces a party investigation for expressing views deemed sympathetic to the opposition. - Mkini
