SABAH IN SHOCK: ‘STAY CALM’ – SHAFIE TELLS SABAHANS AS WARISAN’S LIBARAN CHIEF KILLED IN ‘FREAK ACCIDENT’ A DAY BEFORE POLLS

SANDAKAN: Parti Warisan Sabah’s division chief for Libaran was killed while having a drink at a restaurant in Bandar Utama here after a sports utility vehicle (SUV) ploughed into him.
Aris Malayu, 56, died on the spot in the incident at around 9.30am on Tuesday.
Sources said the 61-year-old SUV driver was parking her vehicle in a designated spot when she lost control of the car, and accidentally stepped on the accelerator.
The SUV crashed into Aris, who was seated at the table located right in front of the vehicle.
His body was sandwiched between the car and a pillar.
It is believed that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, but a blood sample was taken for assessment.
Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal extended his condolences to Aris’ family.
He also advised supporters against speculating about the accident.
“Let the police do their job and investigate the case,” he said.
Sabah police commissioner Datuk Ramli Din is expected to give a press conference on the case later Tuesday. -ANN
MEANWHILE, ACCORDING TO MALAYSIAKINI:

On eve of polling, Warisan is upbeat – but warns of fraud

With less than 24 hours left of campaigning, Parti Warisan Sabah is cautiously confident of its chances in tomorrow’s general election.
Its president, Mohd Shafie Apdal, said he is leaving it to God, pointing out how he has done all he could, “working day and night”.
Shafie said at his home in Semporna today: “I can’t jump the gun by predicting how many seats we will win. We leave it to the people, the voters and we leave it to God.
“But I am confident that the wave of change desired by the people of Sabah will reach its peak tomorrow.”
He is very concerned about the purported giving out of cash to voters.
“Never in my political experience have money, in millions (of ringgit) been disbursed.
“That’s why I mentioned, two years ago, that rain will come. It won’t come through the clouds but money will fall down from the clouds. That’s my concern.”
Shafie only wants to remind voters in Sabah of one thing – that RM500 or even more will not turn them into millionaires.
“But if you vote for Warisan and our allies PKR and DAP, we can topple the government, which has not been giving the people what they really need,” he said.
He is also worried that electoral fraud that may occur.
‘Postal voting ballots in shops’
“Just look at postal voting. The ballots should be kept properly but these are everywhere, at shops and coffee shops,” he claimed.
While Warisan has made great strides, especially for a party that is less than two years old, drawing hundreds, if not thousands, to its election campaign events, it remains uncertain whether this is enough to bring a change of government in Sabah.
However, as the party’s president and the incumbent Semporna lawmaker, Shafie’s chances of at least retaining the seat and even winning the state seat of Senallang seem bright.
Most voters in the constituency still prefer Shafie over his contender Ramlee Marahaban, despite the latter representing the caretaker BN government.
When met by Malaysiakini, Ramlee said he believes that BN has a chance of wresting Semporna from Shafie.
“We are in a winning mode Our work on the ground has convinced us that the swing is with us.”
The BN coalition, Ramlee added, has done many things for the people of Semporna, citing Bum-Bum Island’s upgrade into a sub-district and caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s promise that a bridge would be built from the island to mainland Semporna.
“All these make for our track record and (some more are) in the pipeline.
Shafie, in the last general election, retained the Semporna parliamentary seat with a majority of 20,905 votes. He was then an Umno vice-president and a BN federal minister.
This would be Shafie’s sixth term as Semporna MP, if he wins again – and his first as the president of Warisan.
Leading an electoral opposition pact with PKR and DAP in Sabah, Warisan is contesting in 17 parliamentary and 45 state seats. – MKINI
