Shafie: Don’t be alarmed if ‘driver’ of finance ministry capable

The Sabah chief minister says he will prove 'over time' that it’s not a problem for him to hold the state finance portfolio.
Sabah Chief Minister Shafie Apdal has been criticised for holding the state finance minister portfolio as well.
KOTA KINABALU: Shafie Apdal, who is under pressure to give up his state finance minister portfolio, today used an analogy of a car driver to illustrate his point that the ministry is in safe hands.
Shafie, who was sworn in as Sabah chief minister on May 12, said there should not be any alarm if the “driver” of the ministry is capable.
“You don’t blame the Mercedes, the problem is not the car.
“It could be the fault of the driver… not because of the ministerial post. We’ll prove it over time,” he told reporters at the state administrative office here.
When asked if he intended to hold the finance post on a temporary basis, he said: “We’ll see how it goes.”
Shafie was criticised after announcing his decision to helm Sabah’s finance ministry while also being the chief minister.
There have been calls for him to follow Pakatan Harapan’s footsteps not to allow the prime minister to hold any other portfolio, especially the post of finance minister.
An online petition to pressure Shafie into handing the finance ministry portfolio to someone else carried by change.org, started by one YK Wong last week, has garnered more than 17,000 signatures.
On another matter, Shafie said he would leave it to the police to investigate the alleged criminal intimidation by his predecessor Musa Aman against Sabah governor Juhar Mahiruddin at the state palace on May 10.
“The authorities will take the necessary steps that need to be done,” he said. -FMT
