After bazaar scandal, Fong wants DBKL to cut out the middlemen

DAP lawmaker Fong Kui Lun has urged Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to cut out middlemen in allocating lots for petty traders, following a Ramadan bazaar scandal that he had been dragged into.
"I suggest that DBKL abolishes all these Ramadan, Chinese New Year or Deepavali (stall bookings via middlemen).
"They should directly give the lots to the individual applicants, not through any of the NGOs or societies," the Bukit Bintang MP told reporters when met in Kuala Lumpur today.
He added that this would also help poor traders make a living.
Fong said this after lodging a police report at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters over the bazaar scandal.
Last week, Malaysiakini reported that Bukit Bintang Bersatu Youth chief Mohd Noorhisyam Abd Karim became embroiled in the scandal after it was alleged that middlemen acting on his behalf sold bazaar lots in Jalan Masjid India for up to RM5,000 a lot.
Fong was dragged into the scandal because of his support letter for Mohd Noorhisyam.
In his report, Fong denied knowing that any lots would be sold, or that he agreed to such an arrangement.
Noorhisyam has also denied the allegations against him and lodged a police report on the matter on Monday.
Fong told reporters that the issuing letters of support was a norm for an MP.
He said in his five terms as a lawmaker, he has issued a few thousand support letters, especially for those seeking welfare.
"Those seeking social welfare need such a letter from the MP or an assemblyperson to apply for support.
"If they don't have the support letter from us, they don't get aid from social welfare," Fong added. - Mkini
