Ismail Kassim exits Umno, now wants to join Bersatu

Following the Perlis menteri besar imbroglio, Tambun Tulang assemblyperson Ismail Kassim has announced that he has left Umno and is now an independent candidate.
Speaking to the New Straits Times, Ismail, the brother of Perlis BN chief Shahidan Kassim said he has lost confidence in the current Umno leadership and now wished to forge a relationship with the Pakatan Harapan federal government.
He reportedly said the move was one he had been contemplating since 2008 following the 12th general election.
Then opposition Pakatan Rakyat had made major inroads in the 2008 national polls winning five states - Penang, Selangor, Perak, Kelantan and Terengganu. However, it later lost Perak to BN due to defections.
"I have to think about what is best for the people and align with the federal government," Ismail was quoted saying.
He was also reported to have expressed his intention of joining Bersatu in the Harapan coalition and would make another announcement on that soon.
On his brother Shahidan's response to him leaving Umno, Ismail stated that his brother had no knowledge of his decision.
Ismail had said: "I am doing this without my brother's knowledge and I wish to state that I am not a puppet.
"I also want to prove that we can be siblings but have different views in terms of politics."
Opted out
Ismail found himself caught in the middle of the Perlis menteri besar crisis following the 14th general election.
His was one of the names nominated as menteri besar candidate by his brother Shahidan.
However, Bintong assemblyperson Azlan Man was sworn in instead to the objection of the remaining nine BN assemblypersons.
The Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail declared that he chose not to elect Ismail for fear the latter would be no more than a "puppet controlled by external factors".
This was dismissed by Ismail who then opted out of the running for MB saying neither he nor Azlan should hold the post and suggested the ruler choose from one of the other eight BN assemblypersons.
He was absent when the eight other assemblypersons were eventually sworn in, making him the only BN lawmaker without a position on the state executive council. -Mkini
