Annuar: GE14 results show Umno still top pick for Malay voters

A preliminary analysis of the May 9 general election results showed that Umno is still the preferred choice of the majority of Malay voters, according to its information chief Annuar Musa.
He said the analysis revealed that about 60 percent of Malay voters backed Umno and the party still has the most number of MPs.
Speaking to Umno Online, the Ketereh MP said the figures must be made known because the party must appreciate its supporters.
Annuar said the reason behind the defeat of numerous Umno leaders in the election was due to non-Malay voters casting their ballots for Pakatan Harapan as well as Malay voters being split between Umno and PAS.
"In any (constituency), the non-Malays and non-Muslims make up more than 10 percent, it is enough to cause the Umno (candidate) to lose.
"(This is because) Malay voters are split between Umno and PAS," he added.
Annuar said only two percent of non-Malay voters backed BN. However, it should be noted that he was likely referring only to Peninsula Malaysia.
In view of this, the Umno leader said Harapan cannot claim to have the mandate of the voters.
"If we look at the micro-level, Harapan is a (coalition) which received a strong mandate from Chinese and non-Malay voters.
"Meanwhile, Umno is still the party which received the mandate of the Malays and Muslims," he said.
The facts, according to Annuar, was that Umno lost the election because it was part of the BN coalition.
"We have to understand that although we have a lot of parties in Peninsula Malaysia, but MCA only won one seat, MIC won two and Gerakan won none.
"As of now, the statistics showed that this is the first time in history that Umno and BN received less than two percent of the non-Malay vote," he added.
He said Umno's future in BN might need to be reviewed on the grounds that the non-Malays are no longer keen on the coalition's policies. -Mkini
