‘Does Idris want to fight Anwar over Selangor MB issue?’

The brewing discontent within PKR over Amirudin Shari being named Selangor menteri besar earlier today has reached the party’s leaders in the north.

Penang exco and PKR deputy youth chief Afif Bahardin asked if Ijok assemblyperson Dr Idris Ahmad wants to go on the warpath against de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim over the matter.

Idris had claimed earlier today that the choice of Amirudin for menteri besar did not get the consensus of Pakatan Harapan parties, which Afif denies.

"Amirudin's name was held up by the party and has been endorsed by the Selangor ruler.

"There had been a consensus to pick Amirudin, our de facto leader Anwar has also supported him.

"My question is, does Idris want to fight against Anwar? Please refer to our leader's most recent tweet," Afif (photo) told Malaysiakini.

Anwar had taken to Twitter earlier today to urge all quarters to back Amirudin.

"This can be resolved in an amicable manner within Harapan," his tweet read.

Amirudin replaces Mohamed Azmin Ali, who relinquished the post of Selangor menteri besar after being taking up the economic affairs portfolio in Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s cabinet.

In his press conference today, Idris had claimed to be the sole menteri besar candidate endorsed by all Harapan parties.

He alleged that Amirudin only had the support of Azmin, which the latter flatly denied.

To back his claim, Idris showed photocopies of endorsement letters purportedly signed by representatives of four Harapan parties, including PKR’s Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Bersatu’s Abdul Rashid Asari, Amanah’ Izham Hashim and DAP’s Tony Pua.

‘Continuing Azmin’s legacy’

Meanwhile, Afif expressed delight that his friend is leading Selangor, saying that Amirudin qualifies for the post based on his track record as an assemblyperson and a state exco.

"We hope Amirudin can continue Azmin's excellent performance when leading Selangor and its team during his tenure, besides focusing on empowering the youths to reach greater heights in the state,” he said.

Afif also thanked Anwar and Wan Azizah for entrusting a young leader to lead the state. -Mkini
