Election Commission chairperson Mohd Hashim Abdullah will leave the commission on July 1.
This was notified in a statement from the EC corporate communication division today.
"The EC would like to inform that Mohd Hashim Abdullah will shorten his tenure as the chairperson, effective July 1, 2018.
"The shortening of this service tenure has been approved by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and informed through a letter from the comptroller of the royal household, dated June 7, 2018," said the statement.
According to the statement, the matter has also been submitted to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in an official letter dated June 11.
Hashim joined the EC on Sept 5, 2014 as deputy chairperson, and was appointed chairperson on Jan 24, 2016.
His tenure has been riddled with allegations of him being aligned to the previous BN administration, as well as manipulating the election to allow certain parties to win.
Hashim has denied such accusations, citing results in favour of Pakatan Harapan as an example of EC acting in a "fair and transparent" manner. - Mkini
