Ex-Pahang MB settles suit with lawyers over unpaid fees

Lawyers Manjeet Singh Dhillon and Americk Sidhu have withdrawn their suit against former Pahang menteri besar Adnan Yaakob over the alleged non-payment of legal fees at the Sessions Court today.
Adnan, 68, who came to court said the case had been settled.
His lawyer Adnan Seman confirmed the withdrawal of the suit, while Americk also verified that the matter had been settled with undisclosed terms.
"There is no order made as to costs," both lawyers confirmed.
"The matter is settled amicably," added Americk.
The settlement was recorded before Sessions Court judge Nurul Husna Awang.
Both Manjeet and Americk had sued Adnan for non-payment of legal fees after representing the former Pahang MB in a suit against news outlet Utusan Malaysia in 2014, which went all the way up to Federal Court and which was finally settled in the High Court.
In their statement of claim filed earlier this year, the lawyers claimed RM214,825 in unpaid legal fees for representing Adnan against Utusan.
The duo represented Adnan against Utusan over a series of reports, the main one titled "Hebat sangatkah Adnan" on development in Cameron Highlands.
In the High Court, Utusan Malaysia's bid to strike out the suit failed, but they were successful in their appeal to the Court of Appeal, where it ruled that Adnan could not sue in his official capacity.
However, in the Federal Court, the bench led by then Chief Justice Arifin Zakaria reinstated the suit, and ordered the trial to proceed in the High Court, without ruling on the locus standi issue.
It was reported that Adnan settled the suit against Utusan Malaysia last August.
Adnan, in his statement of defence, said he is capable of paying the amount, and added that he has already paid the two lawyers RM210,000 in legal fees. -Mkini
