PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim breaking fast with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad last night is proof that their relationship is as cordial as ever, Pakatan Harapan communications bureau member Khairuddin Abu Hassan said.
He said this disproves speculation by Umno that Mahathir and Anwar were at odds.
"We should be grateful that unity among Harapan leaders, in reality, is very close and genuine.
"The fact is, Anwar is playing a proactive role in his own way in strengthening the Harapan government's position," Khairuddin said in a statement today.
He added that both leaders were committed to uplifting Malaysia, which superseded any of their own personal agendas.
Khairuddin was commenting on a photo uploaded on Anwar's Facebook page last night that he and his wife Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail were having a "double date" with Mahathir and his wife Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
Speculation had been rife since Anwar's release from prison last month that he was plotting to fast-track plans for him to succeed Mahathir as prime minister.
This was fuelled, among others, by meetings Anwar has held with various rulers, including the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V.
This, too, was dispelled by Wan Azizah, who told Malaysiakini that her husband was in "no rush" to replace Mahathir and that he remained committed to helping the current leadership under Mahathir. -Mkini
