Standard Six pupil Ervin Devadasan donated the money he had been saving for months to purchase a drum set to Tabung Harapan Malaysia.
He handed his piggy bank to DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang during a press conference at Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh's service centre today.
“I would like to donate my piggy bank to Tabung Harapan because after GE14, I was following up with the news and I saw that Malaysia had a need (for money).
“I’ve been saving this money for six to eight months,” he told reporters.
However, PKR supreme council member Latheefa Koya expressed her disagreement on Twitter this afternoon.
“Tabung Harapan is a politically charged fund. So to get a 12-year-old to hand over his piggy bank is ridiculous and a pretty cheap stunt,” she said.
Her posting also included the hashtags “#startgoverning” and “#enoughofgimmicks.”
'Stop the sideshows, just do the work'
Contacted later, Latheefa said while Devadasan could be exercising his patriotism, the money should not have been accepted.
“You make the whole thing (look) exploitative. It's quite exploitative, put it that way.
“There is no doubt the kid could have been patriotic but they should have declined and said 'thank you very much, it's a very nice gesture'. But you shouldn’t be making a show out of it, a gimmick out of it,” she added.
Latheefa pointed out that children should not be dragged into such matters.
“It's a stunt and done in the name of what? Patriotism? And at a PC (press conference), you know,” she added.
The PKR leader also reminded Pakatan Harapan leaders that they were no longer in the opposition.
“We should be showing how we can govern. No more stunts, no more gimmicks, just do the work.
“All these things, how does it add to your governing? It doesn't add to anything. All it says is 'even a kid loves us'. We don't need that kind of stunts
“They should focus on that (governing) and not do all these sideshows. I am not saying they haven't started governing.. but this kind of sideshows distract the focus and seriousness
“You make yourself look like we are forever in election mode,” she added.
At the press conference earlier, Yeoh had described the donation as the “beautiful thing about Malaysia” after the May 9 general election.
“The young and the old all want to play their part just to make this nation better,” she said.
Tabung Harapan had collected RM88.36 million as of 3pm yesterday, increasing by RM13.26 million from the day before's total of RM75.1 million. - Mkini
