Puteri Umno chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin today said she will reconsider her decision to sit out of the upcoming party polls after receiving "pressure" to contest for one out of the three vice-presidents' post.
Speaking at a press conference after chairing a Puteri Umno exco meeting at the party's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Mas Ermieyati said that her change of mind was due to pressure from both her Masjid Tanah division members as well as her wing members.
"I have not made any decision. There is pressure and calls for me to contest for the vice-president's post.
"I did not tell them yes, I did not tell them no," said the Umno Masjid Tanah division chief who retained her Masjid Tanah parliamentary seat in the 14th general election.
Mas Ermieyati had last month during a function in her constituency announced that she will not be contesting for any positions in order to give way for other leaders to transform the party.
The former deputy minister also said she would officially announce her latest decision on June 17 after the upcoming Hari Raya celebrations.
Referring to her earlier decision to sit out of the party polls, Mas Ermieyati said it was made out of a realisation that while her own wing has seen an increase in membership numbers, the figure was not translated into support for Umno at the ballot boxes.
On May 22, Umno acting president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that according to the party constitution and regulations, all top posts in Umno – including that of the president, deputy president, vice-presidents and wing chiefs – are open for contest in the next party election.
As of today, the vice-president's post has received the most number of nominations including Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin; Umno supreme council members Mahdzir Khalid and Tajuddin Abdul Rahman; Johor BN chairperson Mohamed Khaled Nordin; Kemaman Umno division chief Ahmad Said and former second finance minister Johari Abdul Ghani. - Mkini
