Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan has urged the new government to follow Agriculture Minister Salahuddin Ayub’s move in separating their politics from their ministerial duties.
Patriot president Mohd Arshad Raji applauded Salahuddin for telling his ministry staff not to attend any of his political events.
“Patriot applauds the decision of the agriculture minister as it reflects his understanding and knowledge of his dual role, that is as a minister on one hand and as a politician on the other.
“Salahuddin’s statement can be regarded as a hallmark of a true politician, one who does not take advantage of his ministerial position to project oneself as a caring and worthy politician.
“We urge the new government to take the cue from Salahuddin’s statement and to adopt it as a policy for all ministers and deputy ministers,” he said in a statement today.
Such a policy, Arshad added, will stop the rampant abuses which were prevalent in the past and save ministry staff from performing functions outside the scope of their departmental responsibilities.
He said heads of departments also need to issue specific instructions to their staff in defining what is a political task and what isn’t, further claiming that there have been instances where heads of departments would issue instructions to attend political events of ministers.
“Patriot would also like to commend the action taken by the new government to have a serious relook into the salaries and allowances of political appointees holding positions in GLCs.”
Arshad said it does not make sense for chief executive officers to be paid RM100,000 a month, adding that there needs to be a reasonable basis for these high salaries.
The same goes for senior public servants who are appointed to hold positions in the board of GLCs, he added. - Mkini
