MOF: Civil servants’ Raya bonus needs parliamentary approval

The Finance Ministry has confirmed that allocations for the Hari Raya bonus promised to civil servants by the previous administration will first need to be approved by Parliament.
“The Finance Ministry’s recent statement that the additional allocation or the Supplementary Supply Bill for the Aidilfitri bonus for civil servants and retirees still has to be approved in the July parliamentary session is accurate.
“This is because even though the Aidilfitri 2018 bonus was stated in the Budget 2018 speech, it was merely an announcement, as there was no allocation prepared in the budget itself,” the ministry said in a statement today.
Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak had announced a bonus of RM1,500 for all civil servants in his Budget 2018 speech on Oct 27, 2017.
RM500 of this was to have been paid during Hari Raya.
The Finance Ministry also stated that it had received confirmation from the Accountant-General’s Department that no allocations were set aside after Najib's announcement.
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng noted, however, that the federal government will request for extra allocation to make the payout in the upcoming parliamentary sitting.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has since announced that all civil servants under Grade 41 and below will get a Hari Raya bonus of RM400, while retirees will get RM200. -Mkini
