Nik Nazmi best choice for youth and sports minister, says M'sian Youth Council

The Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) has endorsed Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad as their choice for youth and sports minister under the new Pakatan Harapan government.
MBM vice-president Jufitri Joha told reporters that Nik Nazmi, along with Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, were two candidates who stood out for the position.
"But I see Nik Nazmi as having a better chance," Jufitri told reporters when met after a meeting with the Council of Eminent Persons at Ilham Tower in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.
"We note that his (Nik Nazmi) age is between 30 to 40 years old and he has experience dealing with youth issues.
"He was also a former Selangor exco in charge of education so I see that he is most appropriate for the post due to his experience," he said.
Nik Nazmi, who is PKR Youth chief, was previously a two-term state assemblyperson for Seri Setia and was appointed as Selangor exco in charge of education, human resource development, and science and technology.
MBM president mooted as senator
At the same time, Jufitri (photo) also said MBM had proposed greater youth representation and empowerment to the council, beginning with the appointment of MBM’s president as a senator to represent the youth.
"This is so we (MBM) will have an official channel to effectively raise the issues that we have discussed to the country's top leadership, given our position as recognised under the Youth Societies and Youth Development Act 2007," he explained.
The current president of the organisation is Muammar Gaddafi Jamal Jamaludin.
Jufitri said the MBM will most likely hold its elections for a new president in October, after which the person would be recommended to take up the position as senator.
MBM is the coordinating body for youth and student associations in Malaysia as recognised under the Youth Societies and Youth Development Act 2007. It received an RM10 million allocation from the government last year.
'Focus on youth vocational training'
MBM information chief Mohamad Rizan Hassan (photo), meanwhile, said they had also urged the government to fulfill their promises to improve Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for youths.
"This is the right time if the government is truly serious to help our youths pursue their studies, because now is the intake season and many youths are interested in upgrading their skills," he said.
In its election manifesto, Pakatan Harapan promised that the delivery of TVET programmes would be more structured, beginning with the development of the German Dual Vocational Training (GDVT) programme all across the country.
Through this scheme, companies are also given incentives to conduct in-job training for TVET students. - Mkini
