Police probe FMT over ‘force clean-up’ report

The report originally by a Singapore daily said top police officers would be axed next month.
PETALING JAYA: Bukit Aman police are investigating FMT over a report that top police officers would be removed as part of changes at key institutions initiated by the new government.
It is understood that police have opened a probe into the publication of an article earlier this month, which was based on a report by Singapore’s Straits Times (ST).
Police have contacted FMT editors over the report entitled “Heads to roll in police, 3 departments to shut, says report”, and are expected to question them next week.
It is the first time police are investigating members of the media since the May 9 polls, the aftermath of which has seen major changes in Malaysia’s media landscape, with the new government promising to roll back laws that scuttle press freedom.
On June 11, FMT quoting ST said Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun would be among several senior policemen to be axed in July, as part of a “cleaning up” of the force.
ST also said that three “graft-ridden” departments would be shut down: the Special Task Force for Anti-Vice, Gaming and Gangsterism (Stagg), Special Task Force on Organised Crime (Stafoc) and Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING).
Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has denied the report. - FMT
